high score

Life is a lot like a video game. We all start at a certain level, and then we try our best to work our way up. It’s all about taking what you have and making the most of it, always striving to be just a little bit better than you were yesterday.

There are always new and small ways to build a better life. It’s something that we can all continue to do until the day we die. No matter where you find yourself, there is always a new “high score” to beat.

You can choose to beat your high score in anything. Maybe you want to beat your time running a mile, or what grade you get on a test in Chemistry, or how much money your business makes next month.

It doesn’t matter what you strive to be better at, only that you strive to be better at something. Don’t just settle where you are, find joy in pushing yourself further and discovering new plateaus.

I’ve written before about why you should treat your life more like a video game, because this attitude can often help us become more motivated. For example:

“When gamers fail at a mission, they rarely lose their motivation to learn from mistakes or try again. Instead, gamers always feel that they are just on the verge of ‘leveling up,’ or getting to the next stage, or discovering something important that helps get them closer to success.”

If we had this same attitude toward life in general, we would always feel that we are just on the verge of making a positive difference in our real world lives.

We begin to feel we are always “close” to our personal goals, and that they are truly achievable, so we get an extra boost of dedication and willpower to actually accomplish them.

Choose just one thing in your life that you want to improve. Find a way to measure your progress (even if it’s just “time spent doing X”) and then strive to beat your high score.

Once you beat your high score in one thing, it gives you more confidence that you can beat your high score in something else – when you work hard, keep trying, and never give up.

So focus on beating one high score in your life, however small or insignificant it may seem at first. It’ll give you a boost in confidence and motivation that you can continue to build off of as you beat new high scores in the future.
