Milton Friedman discusses the American Medical Association. According to him, the AMA’s monopoly on the licensure of physicians in the United States has put a damper on competition within the industry, leading to lower quality services as well as limited availability to the American public. Although I don’t yet fully accept Friedman’s suggestion, I still find it an interesting proposition that is worth spreading, check it out:

To clarify, the AMA does not participate in the licensure of physicians, nor does it limit the number of people who pursue careers in medicine – it has no power to do so. The AMA continues to advocate for an increase in the physician workforce, especially as we work for all Americans to have affordable, high-quality health coverage. We need to attract the best and brightest to careers in medicine and help practicing physicians continue to provide high quality patient care.

Maybe not directly or legally, but the AMA is known for lobbying a lot of legislation that, through the basic laws of economics, severely limits the amount of available physicians.
I recommend people watch Milton Friedman's "Freedom To Choose" as well as this incredibly informative Youtube video so people can better think for themselves on whether or not the AMA really serves the people's interest.
AMA administers the RBRVS – which sets healthcare prices. Medicare unequivocally accepts the AMA's recommendations. Other insurers follow suit.
Down with the AMA!
